127 Years Since UK's Joint-Lowest Temperature Recorded

The Coldest Spot in Britain

Braemar, Aberdeenshire Marks a Historical Anniversary

February 11th, 2023, marked 127 years since the United Kingdom's joint-lowest temperature was recorded at the weather station in Braemar, Aberdeenshire. The temperature plummeted to a bone-chilling -27.2 degrees Celsius (-16.9 degrees Fahrenheit) on that fateful day in 1895, making it one of the coldest places in the UK.

Braemar has a reputation as one of the coldest places in Britain, often experiencing extreme temperatures during winter. The village is situated at an altitude of 350 meters above sea level and is surrounded by the Grampian Mountains, which contribute to its cold climate. The area is also prone to temperature inversions, where cold air gets trapped in the valley, leading to particularly low temperatures.

The Met Office, the UK's national weather service, has been keeping records of temperatures in Braemar since 1860. Over the years, the village has seen several exceptionally cold spells, including in 1881 when the temperature dropped to -26.7 degrees Celsius (-16.0 degrees Fahrenheit) and in 1982 when it reached -25.0 degrees Celsius (-13.0 degrees Fahrenheit). However, the record set in 1895 remains the coldest ever recorded in Braemar.

While the extreme cold in Braemar can be challenging for residents, it also attracts visitors from far and wide. The village is a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts, offering opportunities for skiing, snowboarding, and ice skating. The cold weather also provides ideal conditions for outdoor winter activities such as snowshoeing, ice climbing, and sledding.

As we mark the 127th anniversary of the UK's joint-lowest temperature recorded in Braemar, it is a reminder of the extreme weather conditions that can occur in the UK. While the cold can be harsh, it also shapes the unique character of Braemar and attracts visitors seeking a taste of winter adventure.
